A very good question. The short story (we'll save the unexpurgated version for some time far in the future) is that we now have brand new passports with entry visas, and therefore can get on the plane. Reserved seats are Sunday night, and we're wait-listed for Friday night.
Many thanks to all who helped us through the past few days - hugs, tissues, soup and righteous indignation were all appreciated. We now feel better equipped to handle any further "bumps" which might come our way in this process.
